"Northwest Passage" is a collaboration between sound artist Matthew Barlow and multi-instrumentalist, Andy Loebs - both from Asheville, NC.

Not quite sure what to expect, Matt & Andy got together and recorded several improvised sessions together. There were no directions, no plans - they simply setup and started playing. After the initial sessions were recorded, Barlow went back and processed the sessions, arranging them into the final version you hear now.

The album is a journey through sound & texture, emotion & imagination, dreams & visions. Explore "Northwest Passage" for yourself and discover it's horizons.

"Exploratory atmospherics from Matthew Barlow and Andy Loebs, with Northwest Passage on Twin Springs Tapes. Glitched vocals, cavernous ambience, manic drumming and riffage, a single improvisational experience twisted and reformed in post production into a sort of reborn tape scene post rock. From soft reverberating percussion, to meandering schizophrenic strings, and melancholic folksy guitar, the album length c-45 is an expansive and evolving journey. This stuff feels poured over enough to mean something, but spontaneous enough to be still be alive. I was transfixed by the track Wounds And Scars, which combines a sort of ambient heaviness of thick sound walls and an absolutely broken up drum kit being played to death. Kind of sounds like all the deliciously strange interludes from Bowie's Outside spliced together and played on a quadraphonic stereo in the dark at 3am. And by the way, just what is in the water in North Carolina that could be causing such a prolific output of experimental music of late?" - guidemelittletape.blogspot.com

The thought of "Valley Flutes" and the fluffy cover had me fearing yet another New Age schlock tape to toss on the pile. Was quite happy to be wrong after giving both long-form compositions a listen. Feels more like old-school ambience with slight nods to the avant garde and psychedelia of the era. Easily my 2nd favorite come down tape from CTatsu after Prayer's "Second Species". jasonk
